Alive and direct: Reports of the death of DC drives and motors have been greatly exaggerated

Article Abstract:

The AC verses DC issue has been widely debated by drive and motor manufacturers, machinery users and OEMs. Market analysts have long predicted that AC technology would take over but DC can offer high speed and torque accuracy and a small motor frame size than AC. An advantage of AC over DC is in the maintenance issue, and AC drives are generally thought to be easier to programme and more energy efficient. Other arguments against DC include the set-up time.

One step beyond

Article Abstract:

Coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) play an increasingly important part in inspection and quality management. However, accuracy has been compromised in the development of fast-moving machines, and increasingly industries such as aerospace and automotive are calling for equipment that can deliver both speed and accuracy. LK's Ultra CMM is one of a new generation of speedy machines which will give sub micron accuracy at 20m per minute.

An air of automation

Article Abstract:

An increasing number of automation processes use pneumatic systems because they are cost effective, straightforward and clean to use and offer good functionality. Pneumatic cylinders are available in a range of sizes to suit varying application requirements. The industry is likely to go through a period of consolidation under current economic conditions.
