The complex and specific role played by the locus coeruleus-norepinephrine (LC-NE) system for controlling behavior is discussed. The phasic LC activation of neurons facilitates behavior and optimizes task performance while the tonic activity mode of LC neurons help in disengaging from the current task and exploring for alternative behaviors.
