An investigation of cyclic transient behavior and implications on fatigue life estimates

Article Abstract:

The cyclic transient behaviors of 304 stainless steel, normalized 1070 and 1045 steels, and 7075-T6 and 6061-T6 aluminum alloys were investigated. All of them showed similar trends but the 304 stainless steel indicated the most pronounced transient behavior. Implications of the deformation characteristics with regard to fatigue life estimation, especially variable amplitude loading was studied. The high-low step loading was employed to demonstrate the impact of transient deformation on fatigue life estimation methodologies.

Deformation and life estimates for a metal matrix-spherical particular subjected to thermomechanical loading

Article Abstract:

The stress-strain response of a high melting temperature spherical particulate surrounded by a metal matrix with different material properties is modeled. Once the stress-strain behavior in the vicinity of the particulate-matrix interface is determined, it is used to estimate if the thermal cycle of the absence of nominal mechanical loading causes significant fatigue damage.

Modeling of fatigue crack propagation

Article Abstract:

Fatigue crack propagation was modeled by using the cyclic plasticity material properties and fatigue constants for crack initiation. The results suggest that the fatigue crack initiation and propagation behaviors are governed by the same fatigue damage mechanisms, and crack propagation can be treated as a process of continuous crack initiation.
