Answering the siren's call

Article Abstract:

The shy, gentle manatees spend their days peacefully grazing on seagrasses in the islands of Belize City belying their conservation status. The government of Belize is paying more attention to the plight of the manatees, threatened by boat collisions and Earthwatch teams studying their habitat, needs and behavior are putting a lot of efforts to protect these endangered mammals.

A wake-up call from Kobe

Article Abstract:

The Kobe earthquake of Jan. 17, 1995, showed that a moderate quake on a minor fault directly under a city can cause greater damage than a quake on a major fault which is miles away. Building codes in earthquake-prone cities should be modified taking into account this recent discovery.
