Appraisal of the mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans using new data

Article Abstract:

The collision energy optima, the linearity and reproducibility of the response of the analyte to an internal standard and ion abundance ratios needed for compound identification in the mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans were investigated. It is shown that collision energy optima were not affected by the position or number of chlorine atoms and that they are reproducible and span 10-25 V. The response of the analyte was linear and ion abundance ratios were within 25-30% of theoretically derived values.

High-resolution mass spectrometry method for the analysis of 3-chloro-4-(dichloromethyl)-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone in waters

Article Abstract:

The presence of the bacterial mutagen 3-chloro-4-(dichloromethyl)-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone (MX) in drinking water was analyzed through the use of high-resolution mass spectrometry. This method removes chemical interferences and improves the identification of compounds. Benzoic acid was used as the internal standard. Samples and matrix spikes were evaluated to validate the method. Precision of 8% RSD and recoveries of 102% to 108% were observed. The results indicated that MX is produced after water ozonation.

Identification of compounds in mutagenic extracts of aqueous monochloraminated fulvic acid

Article Abstract:

Research was done at the University of North Carolina's Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering on the reaction of monochloramine with natural organics. The study used high-resolution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to identify the byproducts of these reactions. The byproducts included mutagenic compounds, short-chain aliphatic chlorinated organic acids, alcohols and aldehydes.
