Researchers at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHY) believe that there is a physiological basis for the difficulty many children experience decoding words into individual sound units. The brains of poor readers show subtle abnormalities in anatomical structures and activity levels.

Genes seen turning imaginal fly eyes into reality

Article Abstract:

Ulrike Heberlein of the University of California, San Francisco, reported at the June 1996 national meeting of the Society for Developmental Biology her discovery of four genes in Drosophila melanogaster that control the morphogenetic furrow which changes imaginal disc cells into photoreceptors.

URI tries downsizing by formula

Article Abstract:

The University of Rhode Island is using a detailed self-study as a guide for downsizing, which may become a cost-cutting model for other universities. The study compared the tuition and other revenues generated by each department with the costs for maintaining the department.
