Asbestos in the air: a housing boom stirs up natural asbestos in California

Article Abstract:

Increased housing development in the Sierra foothills of Northern California has exposed the threat of asbestos poisoning from the asbestos-rich hills of the area. High levels of tremolite and other high-asbestos rocks are present in the area. The need for legislation regulating naturally-occurring asbestos is highlighted, and state reforms in Virginia and California are considered.

Maglev: a new approach; the Inductrack promises a safer, cheaper system for magnetically levitating trains. The same technology can also be used to launch rockets

Article Abstract:

Magnetic levitating trains, in theory, can provide increased safety and efficiency for train transportation, even though early projects in Japan and Germany have experience difficulties. The Inductrack passive system, being developed at Lawrence Livermore Laboratories, may avoid these difficulties.
