Association of fallout 239+240Pu and 241Am with various soil components in successive layers of a grassland soil

Article Abstract:

Analysis of the association of isotopes of plutonium (Pu) and americium (Am) from the global fallout of atmospheric weapons with fractions from six successive layers of an undisturbed grassland soil showed a high concentration of radionuclides in the layer attached to soil organic matter, oxides and minerals. However, there were marked differences in the partitioning of Pu and Am in all the fractions. More Am were found in fractions bound to oxides, while more Pu were found in residual fractions. Am concentration was also higher in readily exchangeable fractions than Pu.

Identification of two iron-chromate precipitates in a Cr(VI)-contaminated soil

Article Abstract:

Two iron chromate precipitates, KFe3(CrO4)2(OH)6 and KFe(CrO4)2 2H2O, have been discovered in the soil of United Chrome Products' former hard-chrome plating facility in Corvallis, OR. KFe3(CrO4)2(OH)6 was found as small crystals scattered within the bulk soil, while KFe(CrO4)2 2H2O was in the form of crusts in cracks and fractures of the soil. The discovery of the ferric chromate phases is crucial in unearthing geochemical processes that affect Cr(VI) mobility and can influence planned cleanup activities.
