Aviation bill takes flight

Article Abstract:

The House of Representatives and the Senate have passed their respective aviation reauthorization bills. Both bills aim to minimize the financial losses of the airline industry by allocating budgets for the projects and programs of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and by organizing national committees to analyze the industry's finances. A bone of contention between the two bills is the noise reduction issue which involves the requests for passenger facility charges (PFCs). The Senate bill proposes the use of PFCs while the House bill prohibits the approval for such requests.

Transportation bill revises federal policy

Article Abstract:

The Congress approved HR 2950 which allotted $151 million for transportation projects nationwide. The transportation reauthorization bill aims to prevent job losses resulting from the expiration of the previous highway program last Sep 1991. It provides for different budget allowances for the different transportation projects which include maintenance and repair and new road constructions. It also gives the states and cities more responsibility for transportation policies. HR 2950, in effect, supercedes the federal transportation policy which has been in effect for 35 years.

Massive energy bill advances

Article Abstract:

Considerable effort is being undertaken by both houses of the US Congress to pass an energy bill. This piece of legislation is considered significant as it would have profound effects on every sector of the energy industry. The bill, which started from US realization of its vulnerability to disruptions in foreign oil prices during the 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, is also seen as environmentally-inclined as it also provides incentives to alternative fuels and renewable energy resources.
