Bare bones buildings

Article Abstract:

An analytical approach, based on engineering mechanisms and heat transfer to the surrounding atmosphere, enables the construction of buildings whose structural steel systems are exposed. Fire load is determined on the basis of the amount of combustible material, fire and flame profile, and the temperature of the steel structures. The strength of the buildings is computed using a high-temperature flame analysis. Skidmore Owings Merrill has used these principles to build the Broadgate project, London; Ludgate Place office buildings, London; and Hotel Arts tower, Barcelona, Spain.

Columbus clear wells

Article Abstract:

Engineers designed reinforced concrete, rectangular water-storage tanks with rounded corners to efficiently avail the limited space at the Hap Cremean Water Plant, Columbus, Ohio. The construction of these tanks with great storage capacity will be of great benefit to the people in Columbus by supplying them with clean water during emergencies.

Shell of steel

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the developmental and renovation plan for the Raspberry Island of the Mississippi Island in the city of Saint Paul, Minnesota. The plan includes designing and constructing a band shell as a doubly curved glass-covered stainless steel lattice grid shell made of offset pipes and single-rod diagonals.
