Beating scientists into plowshares

Article Abstract:

Industries are increasingly downsizing their own laboratories and providing funding for academic research organizations. This results in a reduction in basic research as well as product-oriented research that is not deemed profitable. Scientists must take action to avoid total takeover.

Recognizing handwriting in context

Article Abstract:

Univ of Buffalo researchers have developed a context-based system of computer handwriting recognition. Candidate words generated by a conventional system are statistically evaluated for their probability of grammatical connection to other words in a message.

A clouded future for IBM research

Financial problems are causing IBM Corp to redirect funds from its highly regarded basic research program to applied research. Many IBM scientists who want to continue to do basic research are looking for jobs elsewhere.
