The World Health Organization (WHO) advocates a renewed international effort to immunize children against communicable diseases, but the effort has met with a tepid response among industry, governments, and media. Vaccination is a cost-effective medical expense, yet funding shortfalls are common.

Sweet success: sugary drugs may stick it to disease

Pharmaceutical firms are racing to develop the first drugs capable of controlling illnesses by preventing sugar-binding proteins from sticking to cells' outer layers. They believe this technology holds much promise in controlling inflammations, organ rejection and even tumor growth.

Oregon wants to institute a program that rations medical procedures to reduce its Medicaid costs. The plan is under review by federal authorities. A long-term medical policy needs to be established that reduces unnecessary costs and procedures.
