Big growth predicted for environmental exports to Mexico

Article Abstract:

Results of an analysis conducted by the Dept. of Commerce on the Mexican market for environmental technology products reveal that US exports to the country may grow by 24% to $2.6 billion in 1995. The growth can be attributed primarily to the effects of the North American Free Trade Agreement. The report also shows that US producers dominate 46% of the solid waste handling equipment sector, 79% of the hazardous waste management equipment and services sector, 51% of the water pollution instruments and services market and 58% of the air pollution control market.

Economic impact of green technologies questioned

Article Abstract:

Discussions during the Second Annual Conference on the Environment, the Economy, and World Trade held in Durham, NC, on Nov. 15, 1994, focused mainly on the economic consequences of environmental regulations and the environmental industries. According to speaker Paul R. Portney, around only 0.8% of jobs in the US are related to the environment and that the US tops all other nations in the balance of environmental trade. He also claimed that regulations have very minimal effect on the economy and on the competitiveness of US businesses.

Cities' drive to privatize water treatment may aid environmental businesses

Article Abstract:

The environmental services industry stands to reap enormous benefits from the privatization of wastewater treatment and drinking water supply systems in the country. Cities' water-related expenditures are expected to rise as they enter into deals with environmental services firms for equipment upgrades, new technologies and meeting increased water consumption. Analysts say deals on drinking water supply and wastewater treatment between businesses and municipalities generate $75 billion in revenues annually.
