Biologists visit New Orleans (under assumed name)

Article Abstract:

Research presented at the Experimental Biology '93 conference indicates that the disruption of the DCC tumor suppressor gene is necessary to the development of colon cancer. Research was also presented that indicates that flumazenil seems to protect rats from age-related memory problems.

New tumor suppressor gene captured

Article Abstract:

An international team of scientists have identified the gene that causes von Hippel-Lindau disease, which predisposes victims to a wide variety of cancers. The gene is a tumor suppressor gene. It's discovery is expected to lead to improvements in diagnosis and patient monitoring.

The cell's nucleus shapes up: cell biologists are getting a better view of how the internal structure of the nucleus may influence gene replication and activity

Article Abstract:

Cell biologists have discovered that the skeleton of the nucleus, called the nuclear matrix, influences gene activity. Study of this structure could advance understanding of the organization of humane genomes and gene expression in different types of cells.
