Bright sky, dirty city? Houston, we have ground strikes. Lots of them

Article Abstract:

Researchers studying reasons for the increased number of lightning strikes in the Houston, TX, area and Lake Charles, LA, have ruled out natural meteorological conditions as the cause. They now believe that aerosols, or air pollution particles, from the nearby petroleum refineries cause more cloud water to collect in deep convective clouds, thus increasing the amount of lightning.
