British regulatory agency calls for action to reduce use of endocrine-disrupting chemicals

Article Abstract:

The Environment Agency of England and Wales is advocating the use alternative chemicals with lower toxicity as it reveals new evidence that exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals pose great risks to wildlife. Growing concern for the wide-ranging effect of the endocrine or hormone disrupters prompted the agency to focus its efforts on the water industry, which releases large amounts of natural and synthetic chemicals. The male roach, a common British freshwater fish, were found to contain precursors of eggs and sperms in highly-contaminated English and Irish rivers.

Bamberger rearrangement during TNT metabolism by Clostridium acetobutylicum

Article Abstract:

Trinitrotoluene (TNT) transformation by Clostridium acetobutylicum forms either 2-amino-4-hydroxylamino-5-hydroxyl-6-nitrololuene or 2-hydroxylamino-4-amino-5-hydroxyl-6-nitrotoluene through a process known as the Bamberger rearrangement. The product was confirmed through the use of H NMR and IR spectroscopy and results also show that the reaction occurred in cell extract and H2 but not in cell extract-free environments.
