Budget ax to spare research?

Research funding will remain steady for French researchers, who expected budgets to be slashed when Pres Jacques Chirac took office. The government, honoring the previous administration's commitments, will also begin repaying the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique's $200-million debt.

Research is absorbed into superministry

Article Abstract:

Government research in France will be part of a new superministry that includes secondary and higher education under a plan formulated by the government of newly elected Pres Jacques Chirac. The scientific community views the move as an ominous sign of Chirac's lack of interest in science.

Researchers' protest pays off, for now

Research minister Francois Fillion guaranteed that the none of France's Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique's $2.46-billion 1995 budget would be withheld. Scientists remain concerned that funds withheld from former years will not be restored.
