Diabetes complications: why is glucose potentially toxic?

Article Abstract:

Research evidence indicates that glucose is involved in the activation of the Beta2 isoform of protein kinase C (PKC) in vascular tissue, which triggers diabetic complications. The finding could lead to methods that could interrupt glucose-induced tissue damage in diabetic patients.

A new way to ask the experts: rating radioactive waste risks

Article Abstract:

Earth scientists have developed a method called expert elicitation to evaluate the uncertainties and risk estimates of nuclear waste sites. Using the method produced a 1 in 10,000 chance of a volcanic eruption at the proposed repository at Yucca Mountain.
