Sowing disaster: concentration in agribusiness is undermining rural America

Article Abstract:

Significant changes have taken place in the structure of the agricultural industry in the US. Some sectors have become more concentrated than others. The more rapid consolidation in agribusiness has created a number of problems that raise challenging questions about the future structure of agriculture in the US. Extensive restructuring of the agricultural industry has had a negative impact on rural communities that rely on a strong farm economy for their survival. Agricultural concentration is reshaping the rural landscape, and could negatively affect the long tradition of independent agricultural production.

The stalemate in food and agricultural research, teaching and extension

The role of land-grant universities (LGUs) is changing in the 1990s. Unlike its traditional mission of teaching modern agriculture to an agrarian society, the modern LGU needs to focus on human food and forest product systems, life science and biotechnology, environmental quality and natural resource preservation.

Teaching the spinal cord to walk

Article Abstract:

An experimental program in Germany is helping patients with damaged spinal cords to regain limited walking ability. Neural circuits in the spinal cord can learn to function independently from the brain in controlling walking.
