Burning ambition: researchers hope that computer models will help designers to make factories and offices safer in the event of fire

Article Abstract:

Some computer programs that model fires and predict their outcome to reduce the damage and loss of life engendered by these events have been created. The Smartfire system creates a 3D mesh of the structure being modelled for the investigation of the spread of a fire that has started anywhere within the structure. Meanwhile, the Computation of Risk Indices by Simulation Procedures (CRISP) presents an alternative way to model fire propagation. CRISP considers such factors as temperature and smoke to model the spread of fire, aside from simulating the people caught in a burning structure.

Plug and play: CAD and rapid prototyping techniques are providing new freedom for boat designers

Article Abstract:

Naval architect Paul Handley is one of Britain's pioneers of the latest CAD production methods. An important part of a boat designer's job is ensuring that the vessel's lines are smooth and continuous but this is difficult to do on a small screen. Modern software can help the designer by showing areas of discontinuous curvature, while CNC techniques, borrowed from the automotive industry, allow parts or tooling to be constructed directly from CAD data.
