Cancer research at the crossroads

Article Abstract:

Cancer research needs to investigate other causes of cancer in addition to smoking. Though smoking has been the most important known cause of cancer, the effort to investigate other causes of cancer has not been taken in earnest. The difficulties in identifying and prevention of the causes of cancer is partly due to too much focus of research on the germ theory. The causes of cancer cannot be fully explained by infectious-disease model. Cancer appear to arise from interactions between the host and long-term, multiple exposure to tumor-causing or enhancing agents.

Is there cause for "environmental optimism"?

Article Abstract:

Gregg Easterbrook's 'Moment on the Earth: The Coming of Age Environmental Optimism' rightly concludes that much has been accomplished in the effort to arrest the deterioration of the environment. However, the book takes the remaining environmental problems too lightly. The global environment may have improved but the fact remains that these problems are very serious and that there should be no letup in efforts to address them.

The need for uniform soil cleanup goals

Article Abstract:

Remediation goals for groundwater and contaminated soil are currently established on a site-by-site basis. Since pertinent laws offer little guidance on such goals, parties often end up negotiating as to what extent cleaning efforts should reach. In addition, standards vary depending on the particular state. There is a clear need for Federal authorities to establish a common and uniform set of standards for soil remediation.
