Intrigue at the immune synapse

Article Abstract:

High-resolution microscope images of immune cells, which exchange and store information in the course of searching for and responding to disease have revealed temporary membrane structures similar to 'synapse' connection that nerve cells make with one another for communication. All the surface proteins involved in immune cells recognition of disease are identified and named and observing the real-time interactions of immune cells is a new avenue for understanding their sharing and processing information to defend the body against disease.

The quest for the superlens

Article Abstract:

A slab of negative-index material could act as a superlens to create images that include detail finer than that allowed by the diffraction limit, which constrains the performance of all positive-index optical elements is reviewed. The prospect of negative refraction has caused physicists to reexamine virtually all of electromagnetic, which was once thought to be completely understood as basic optical phenomena.
