Recession lessons to remember

Article Abstract:

The economicrecession has badly hit the structural engineering industry. This results from the industry's dependence on the building industry whose economic conditions rely on the money on hand and market demend. Suggested strategies for coping with the situation include non-specialization to enable the company to reach a broader market, concentrating more on demestic projects and managing finances well. Companies should also consider taking small projects and continuously market their services. Finally, they should provide additional services to clients to ensure their patronage.

Year 2000: are you ready?

Article Abstract:

Engineers should be prepared for the impact of the Year 2000 problem on their businesses. The problem involves the switching off of over 80 million computers on the evening of Dec 31, 1999 and the rolling over to 12:01 am on Jan 1, 2000 which will result in several failures in the systems. It will corrupt databases and dates as well as the global positioning systems. There are three options open to engineers, namely, expansion of the two-digit years to four digits, creating a system identifying certain dates or stuffing four digits into two physical positions.

The art of the deal

Article Abstract:

Engineering firms which have reached a plateau in their development can reach new levels of size or revenue by combining with other firms with complementary specialties. A firm can achieve this by selling itself or by acquiring other firms. A successful merger with another firm facilitates increases in profitability, growth, financial success and ownership liquidity. Compatibility is the most important consideration in the merger of two firms.
