Case for neutrino mass gathers weight

Article Abstract:

Results from three experiments indicate that neutrinos may indeed have mass. The experiments hint at neutrino oscillations between electron, muon, and tau flavors. Oscillations only occur if neutrinos have mass. Two of the experiments used massive underground detectors, while the third involved an accelerator.

A glow from the first galaxies?

Article Abstract:

Astrophysicist Jean-Loup Puget believes faint infrared radiation detected by the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite may indicate the universe's first generation of galaxies and stars. Puget admits the study is tentative, since it involved the difficult task of eliminating foreground radiation.

Star-watchers team up telescopes for a sharper view

Article Abstract:

Cambridge's new optical telescope system, COAST, combines light from four 40-cm telescopes into a single image, producing greater resolution than the most powerful telescopes in existence. Many problems were solved to adapt interferometry, used for years by radio astronomers, to optical imaging.
