Flies unmask evolutionary warfare between the sexes

Article Abstract:

Biologist William Rice has found evidence of coevolutionary warfare between the sexes in the fruit fly. When Rice allowed only males to evolve, a new breed of males impregnated females with toxic seminal fluid the females has developed no defense to. The females laid eggs and died without mating again.

Setting a biological stopwatch

Article Abstract:

Several studies revealed insights on animals' interval timer, a mechanism not as well known as the circadian clock, which coordinates behavior to the passing of seconds and minutes. John Gibbon, Warren Meck and Russell Church link the mechanism to regular dopamine pulses into the basal ganglia.

The origin of dogs: running with the wolves

Article Abstract:

A team of geneticists and evolutionary biologists has discovered that all modern dog breeds descended from the wolf and that the first change from dog to wolf may have occurred more than 100,000 years ago. The study examined mitochondrial DNA from 162 wolves and 140 dogs.
