Catch the wind

Article Abstract:

Structural and geotechnical engineers have a role to play in the production of electricity using wind turbines. These engineers identify sites and design foundations and towers that can support these massive structures. They manage the construction of strings of wind turbines, design access roads and cable systems that connect with the turbines. For instance, high crosswinds necessitated that project engineers supervise the installation of rotors at the Tararua Wind Farm in New Zealand. They also oversaw the construction of the first 48 of the 137 wind turbines in the wind farm.

Pump-and-treat rescue

Article Abstract:

Shepherd Miller Inc. (SMI) used a horizontal well solution to treat a contaminated former manufacturing site in Chicago, Illinois. The groundwater contamination originated from six underground storage tanks which were found to be leaking when the owners sold the site in 1995. SMI investigated the site and found that contaminants, including fuel and solvent, were in a layer up to eight feet thick which was five feet below the surface. The company based its decision to use two horizontal wells to pump and aerate the water on the size and shape of the contaminated areas.
