Article Abstract:

Many of the devices designed for physically-handicapped individuals are poorly-designed in such a way that they lack consideration for the lifestyle and ambitions of the user. The Design for Ability (DA) was thus organized in 1994 at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. DA aims to improve the design of disability products by mainstreaming the approach to the marketing and manufacturing of these devices. This could offer the disabled with a variety of consumer choices and guarantee the appropriate use of limited National Health Service equipment budgets.

Keweenaw Research Center (KRC) uses infrared technologies to help automotive industry designers solve heat-related design problems. KRC researchers, for instance, use the Physically Reasonable Infrared Signature Model (PRISM) software to determine thermal performance based on CAD-CAM drawings while PRISM results are validated using the dual scanner Thermovision 9000 infrared imaging system.
