Gas-particle partitioning of organic compounds and its interpretation using relative solubilities

Article Abstract:

A new way of interpreting and correlating gas-particle partitioning is suggested. Calculating and reporting the corresponding solubility of S(subQ) when reporting the measured values of K(subP) is a useful method of assessing consistency with previous data and as an indication of the presence of adsorption as distinct from absorption.

Temperature dependence of slow adsorption and desorption kinetics of organic compounds in sediments

Article Abstract:

A study aimed at investigating the temperature dependence of slow adsorption and desorption kinetics of some chlorobenzenes, polychlorinated biphenyls (PABs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is presented. The experiment is performed in a lab-contaminated and a field-contaminated sediment. A technique which used Tenax beads was employed to allow the measurement of kinetics of desorption. A first-order kinetic model with tree sediment compartments, meanwhile, described the desorption of the test compounds from the sediments.

Characterizing gas-water interfacial and bulk-water partitioning for gas-phase transport of organic contaminants in unsaturated porous media

Article Abstract:

A research project to test the retardation of trichloroethene transport when partitioning is made into bulk water or at the gas-water interface found that, depending on the type of unsaturated porous media used, 29-73% was retarded at the interfacial partition and 12-30% was retarded at the bulk-water partition. Phase-selective partitioning tracers may be a way to determine how effective different partitioning schemes are in retarding the flow of contaminants in the vadose zone.
