Chauvet study gets the go-ahead

Article Abstract:

Archaeologist Jean Clotte will lead research of the prehistoric paintings in Grotte Chauvet, France, discovered in 1994 and authenticated as the oldest known cave paintings. Although acknowledged as the leading authority in the field, Clotte had to enter a competition for the right to direct the study.

Joining forces to probe environment-health links

Article Abstract:

The International Scientific Committee on Environmental Health was formed to fund research in Eastern Europe, where pollution-caused health problems abound but money for research is nonexistent. Potential benefits of proposed research for both the East and West are described.

Protein matchmaker may lead new gene therapy to the altar

Article Abstract:

Rapamycin, an immune suppressor, can link two proteins that usually would not link. The resulting heterodimer suppresses the immune system's T lymphocytes. This discovery could lead to advances in gene therapy.
