Chemokines take center stage in inflammatory ills

Article Abstract:

Chemokines are a type of cytokines, intracellular messenger proteins, that specialize in bringing white blood cells to sites of inflammation. They have become a hot topic of research since Robert Gallo of the National Cancer Institute suggested their use as suppressors of HIV reproduction.

Systems for identifying new drugs are often faulty

Article Abstract:

Researchers are working on developing better models for screening anticancer drug candidates. They are breeding mice with with genetic alterations that occur in human carcinogenesis. Another approach is to test drugs in cultures of human cells.

Mouse model for pregnancy problem?

Researchers have discovered a strategy for simulating pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) in laboratory mice. The discovery could lead to improved treatments for PIH, which is a major cause of complications in human pregnancies.
