Compression failure in reduced adhesion fiber laminates

Article Abstract:

The compressive properties of fiber laminates with reduced adhesion between fiber and matrix are studied. Experiments are performed wherein carbon/epoxy laminates with weakened fiber-matrix bond are subjected to compressive loadings. The behavior of the laminates under such conditions is then analyzed using a micro-mechanics model. Results show that the compressive strength of the laminates decreased by approximately 75% after the fiber-matrix bond was weakened.

Control of damage in composite laminates by ply-stacking designs: Characteristic failure signatures and safety criteria

Article Abstract:

Methodology for the 'fail-safe' designs of composite laminates is based on the new concept of a characteristic failure signature (CFS) with the built in cumulative damage-indicators for the composites experiencing accumulation of progressive damage and ply failure. The CFSs have unique features that may help in the structural health monitoring and they depend mainly on the ply stacking sequence and predominant loading.

Effect of state of stress on compression failure in carbon/epoxy laminates

Article Abstract:

A model based on an early misalignment of axial fibers exhibits an enhancement of compressive strength of carbon/epoxy laminates with the hydrostatic pressure. The composite failure is detected when the fiber-matrix bond strength is surpassed. A compressive mean stress originates during the compression loadings in thick composites.
