Computer simulation of 3-D random distribution of short fibers in metal matrix composite materials

Article Abstract:

A computer simulation of the microstructure of Saffil-Al2O3 short fiber reinforced Al-Mg5.5 metal matrix composite material was performed. The lengths, diameters, orientations and locations of short fibers were taken into account. Typical distributions of short fiber microstructures on different planes were obtained for different short fiber volume fractions. The results obtained from the short fiber coefficients show that they may be of use in the manufacture of short fiber reinforced composite materials.

Enhancement of thermal conductivities in polymeric fiber reinforced composite materials

Article Abstract:

The use of coated fibers and thermally conductive microspheres for improving the thermal conductivities of polymer-based composite materials is discussed. Tests are conducted wherein the front face two- and three-dimensional finite element unit cell models are subjected to a heat flux. The system's thermal conductivity is then obtained through numerical manipulations. The results show a very good agreement with those obtained using the analytical cell models.

Experimental techniques for dynamic characterization of composite materials

Article Abstract:

Theoretical and experimental methods involving the resonant dwell technique and the off-resonance test-based Metravib Viscoanalyzer help characterize the dynamic properties of composite materials. The resonant dwell technique helps evaluate the real part of dynamic flexural modulus, the material damping and the dynamic properties in terms of oscillation frequency.
