Conserving biodiversity: lessons from the smokies

Article Abstract:

The successful preservation of biological diversity in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park which occupies only a part of the Southern Appalachian region should be a lesson for the preservation of diversity in the whole region. This region is extremely rich in biotic diversity. The conservation efforts, research and land management of this region is coordinated by the Southern Appalachians Man and the Biosphere Program (SAMAB). The establishment of long term research and monitoring systems are called for to overcome the current inability to predict the environmental impacts of actions.

The Climate Change Action Plan seeks to draw on the voluntary cooperation of the corporate sector to achieve a drastic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2000. Such eco-friendly programs rely on the business ingenuity of participants to set and achieve emission reduction targets in a cost effective manner. A highly focused and comprehensive strategy marks this approach which recognizes the efforts of participating corporates. Most Climate Wise companies have achieved significant rise in productivity in the quest for a cleaner and healthier environment.
