Contribution of sulfonate groups and alginate to heavy metal biosorption by the dry biomass of Sargassum fluitans

Article Abstract:

Various techniques were employed to examine the mechanism of heavy metal complexation by the dry biomass of the brown seaweed Sargassum fluitans at the molecular level. Information about the amount of strong and weak acidic functional groups in the biomass were derived from simultaneous potentiometric and conductometric titrations. The chemical identification of sulfonate groups and alginate corresponding to 2.25 mmol of carboxyl groups/g of biomass confirmed these results. Modification of these functional groups by methanolic hydrochloride or propylene oxide revealed the major role of alginate in the uptake of cadmium and lead.

Modeling multi-metal ion exchange in biosorption

Article Abstract:

A model demonstrating the effect of ion exchange in multi-metal systems during biosorption of cadmium, copper and zinc by protonate Sargassum fluitans biomass under different pH conditions is presented. It shows that binding of seaweed biomass with the heavy metals through ion exchange involves multiple binding sites. It also shows that binding of each metal ion is influenced by metal ion concentrations and pH.1

Modeling of the proton-metal ion exchange in biosorption

Article Abstract:

An approach to modeling the binding of heavy metal ions and protons was developed to improve the prediction of the effect of protons as exchanged species on proton-metal ion binding. Biosorption was observed in the algal biomass of Sargassum fluitans. The mechanism of metal ion binding in this biomass is discussed.
