Article Abstract:

The cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) between the National Cancer Institute and Bristol-Myers Squibb has focused on the development of taxol as an effective anti-cancer remedy. The taxol-related CRADA has been effective in coordinating public and private research and development goals related to cancer, such as exploring renewable sources of taxol. Future public/private CRADAs will need to establish the market value of the final product and cater for technological competitiveness. However, the taxol case proves the success of cooperative research ventures.

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has tied up with public and private partners to clear its weapons-manufacturing sites. This is done to verify new technological procedures of waste management. The federal government provides the funds and the states test the effectivity of the technologies used. The private sector is responsible for both investing and developing the technology in collaboration with DOE. This helps in building and transferring technologies by pooling in the best available resources and offers efficient solutions for environmental problems.

Collaborations between the state and federal governments and industry is necessary for the US to achieve global commercial leadership. Collaboration satisfies the needs of the participants by sharing information and technology and is essential for both the state and federal governments in the context of their economic programs. Collaborative strategies are also relevant for universities as much of their programs are funded by joint ventures between government and industry. A balanced partnerships will combine federal and state resources to enhance US competitiveness.
