'Cutting edge' technology: an avant-garde solution of operational effectiveness or careerists nightmare?

Article Abstract:

Contemporary organizations are experiencing increasing economic pressures to become more competitive by improving output and efficiency. For many firms, office automation has been used as a way to reduce staffing levels and thereby enhance productivity. Two cases illustrate the manner by which computer technology affects organizations in different ways. Results of these case studies suggest that the decision to automate has far-reaching ramifications for business enterprises but is not necessarily fully understood by decision makers.

The diffusion of interactive technology at the customer interface

Article Abstract:

Interactive technology usage within retailing varies with the location of the hardware or the means for accessing it. Research suggests that a given population's acceptance of an innovation happens through a consistent and generally predictable process. A study was therefore conducted to elicit from a jury of expert opinion the expected future rate of diffusion of multimedia and virtual reality technologies at the customer interface in the do-it-yourself, fitted furniture, white goods and brown goods retail sectors in the UK.
