Data validation practices and risk assessment

Article Abstract:

Data validationin the risk assessment process needs to be upgraded. Validators should receive copies of the field sampling plan to enable them to gain an overall picture of the project during their assessment and discuss any revision that would improvedata gathering methods. They should also know the project's data-quality objectives to ensure that users have the required amount of data. Other improvements in the data validation process include the provision of data on a compatible computer disk to minimize transcription errors and the formulation of standard guidelines to obtain consistent data assessments.

Illinois DOT ranks risky bridges

Article Abstract:

The Illinois Dept of Transportation (DOT) has conducted an evaluation of about 7000 bridges by ranking them according to their earthquake resistant properties. Woodward-Clyde Consultants developed a computer program to facilitate the study and based this on the bridge ratings systems of the California DOT and the American Assn of State Highway and Transportation Officials. The new system qualified risk as the likelihood of bridge failure plus the bridges' significance in the transportation system. Results showed that 90% of bridges represented low risks while six key bridges needed rehabilitation.
