Deadline approaching

Article Abstract:

The European Union Directive on electromagnetic compatibility, effective Jan 1, 1996, does not contain integral standards. Instead it simply states that electromagnetic disturbances should not exceed a level at which radio and telecommunication equipment can operate as intended. The UK National Measurement and Accreditation Scheme implemented these standards. Manufacturing companies will be required to make a Declaration of Conformity or a Technical Construction File (TCF). An Association of Competent Bodies will form committees to approve the TCF.

Marked machines

Article Abstract:

The European Union (EU) Directive on Machinery Safety which came into effect on Jan 1, 1995, should have a noticeable influence on all companies. According to the Directive, all equipment coming into EU countries should meet the specific regulations and bear the CE Mark. Any default could mean a fine of up to 5,000 pound sterling or a three-month imprisonment. Through the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1992, existing machinery users are also subject to the safety regulations.

Standard procedures

Article Abstract:

The Machinery Directive of the European Union aims to promote free trade within the region by instituting common standards that machine builders and suppliers should adopt. Manufacturers aiming to meet the requirements of the directive are obliged to design and build equipment that incorporate high levels of safety in its operation. Manufacturers should also analyze the applications of the equipment and its operation under plant conditions to enhance risk assessment procedures.
