Dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls by Hudson River sediment organisms: specificity to the chlorination pattern of congeners

Article Abstract:

Studies of the reductive dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by organisms from Hudson Bay sediment indicate that dechlorination is not connected to the chlorine substitution position in itself, but is dependent on the chlorination pattern on congeners, in this case the single congeners 2,3,4-, 2,4,5-, and 2,3,4,5,6-chlorobiphenyls (CBPs). The findings of this study cannot be taken as indications about the natural environment as a whole, as the dechlorination products could vary if other cogeners are present, but the study gives useful data on the process of reductive dechlorination.

Long-term study of the anaerobic dechlorination of Aroclor 1254 with and without biphenyl enrichment

Article Abstract:

An investgation of the long-term rate and pathway dechlorination of Aroclor 1254 by sediment microorganisms from the Hudson river is discussed. Comparisons were made between polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-enriched and non-enriched sediments of their rate, extent and pathway of dechlorination over a 24-month period. Results indicate that highly chlorinated congeners could still be present even after the successful bioremediation of PCBs by dechlorination.

Polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in harbor seal pups from the inland waters of Washington State

Article Abstract:

Congener-specific polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations were determined in harbor seal pups living in the inland waters of Washington State. Concentrations included non-ortho and mono-ortho coplanar PCB congeners, hexachlorobenzene, p,p'-DDE and mirex. Seal samples from Gertrude Island exhibited higher levels of total PCBs, p,p'-DDE and mirex. Congeners 138, 153 and 180 dominated the PCB profiles.
