Defining sustainable agriculture for the tropics

Article Abstract:

Social and political factors are often more important than science and technology in the establishment of sustainable agriculture, according to the 'Sustaintable Agriculture and the Environment in the Humid Tropics' report from the National Academy of Science's National Research Council. The report concludes that world resources can still be preserved while feeding the entire population, but states that governments must find new outlets for agricultural products and encourage sustainable land management. It also highlights the need for agricultural research, pointing out the crucial role of industrialised countries.

Rethinking protected lands in developing countries

Article Abstract:

The industrialization of developing countries is harming the environment. Conservation projects should adopt integrated conservation-development projects (ICDPs), which combine management methods in protected lands and the creation of buffer zones around the protected areas. The cooperation of local and central governments is essential to the success of ICDPs. ICDPs require the financial backing of international agencies and a program of public education in sustainable development.

Fuel cells come of age

Article Abstract:

Developments in the field of fuel cells technology are discussed. Potential advantages involving their environmental vability, operating efficiency, applicability to urban centers and its health dimension were enumerated. However, technical difficulties and economic considerations continue to provide difficulties to fuel cell manufacturers. Further improvements in potential applications must be demonstrated for this technology to find acceptance.
