Defying gravity

Article Abstract:

Florida's Englewood Water District (EWD) decided to construct vacuum sewers to improve its decaying sewer system. Unlike traditional gravity systems, vacuum sewers are inexpensive, reliable and easily installed. In the past, they were used only for small communities with topography or high groundwater that did not allow the installation of gravity systems. However, better technology has enabled their installation even in larger communities. The EWD project will be the largest vacuum sewer ever when finished.

Gravity gradiometry

Article Abstract:

Gravity gradiometers have been used extensively not only as military weapons, but for commercial purposes as well. Originally devised to guide ballistic-missile submarines, these instruments are also used to measure gravity gradients for locating underground resources, such as oil.
