Preparing for Pier A

Article Abstract:

A number of challenges face civil engineers constructing the Pier A Container Terminal facility at the port of Long Beach, CA. Reportedly the largest construction project undertaken by the city of Long Beach, the facility aims to enhance the port's efficiency and shipping traffic. The challenges stemmed from the port's seismically sensitive location and remediation of a contaminated oil field site. Engineers also faced regulatory and environment requirement concerns associated with the site's contaminated soil.

Case studies of deep mixing

Article Abstract:

The construction work at Trans-Tokyo Bay Highway project employs deep mixing technique for long shield-driven tunnels and a 4.4 km long bridge. Soft deep mixing is used to treat the Holocene clay through which tunnels are excavated. The study of deep lime mixing and cement deep mixing methods by the Chinese has helped in a ground-treatment project. The technique was used to construct two wharves at the Tianjin Port in Beijing by improving the soil consisting of layers of clay, silts and sands.

Skin deep

Article Abstract:

Anodizing is a surface finishing procedure which is unique to aluminum and most of its alloys. This process has been often used for architectural and decorative purposes. However, it can also be employed to enhance durability and surface hardness in engineering applications. The three main kinds of anodizing are architectural or decorative anodizing, hard anodizing and chromic acid anodizing. The film of an anodized surface is not a separate coating but instead is a part of the metal.
