Derivatives: not the real thing

The growing use of derivatives as speculative investment vehicles has led to concerns that financial markets could collapse under the weight of too many risky investments. Economists doubt that such an event could occur, but concede that the risk of a derivative-inspired crash is hard to measure.

Clipper runs aground

Article Abstract:

Public outrage caused the Clinton Administration to decide not to introduce the Clipper chip, which would allow court-ordered wiretapped conversations to be decoded. The computer and software industries worry that the chip will hurt the US' global competitiveness.
