Determination of sub-surface distributions of residual stresses by a holographic-hole drilling technique

Article Abstract:

A method is presented for combining incremental hole drilling with holographic interferometry to obtain the distribution of in-plane residual stresses as a function of depth below the surface. The computational basis of the method is summarized. Results of experiments to verify the ability to the method to calculate two different sub-surface stress distributions are presented. Employing the same hologram, the feasibility of obtaining results at greater depths by drilling a large hole directly over a preceding smaller one is illustrated.

Measurement of in-plane residual stresses varying with depth by the interferometric strain/slope rosette and incremental hole-drilling

Article Abstract:

The measurement principle of the Interferometric Strain/Slope Rosette (ISSR), and the numerical calculations and the methodology developed to back-calculate and regularize the residual stress distribution, are presented. The results demonstrate the viability of the regularized ISSR method in measuring stress distribution with depth.

Simulating distortion and residual stresses in carburized thin strips

Article Abstract:

The application of a new multiphase material model for simulating distortion and residual stresses in carburized and quenched gear steels is illustrated. It concluded that the model parameters most significant to realistic simulations are the phase transformation strains, TRIP parameterization and elasticity.
