Direct detection of residual nonaqueous phase liquid in the saturated zone using SF6 as a partitioning tracer

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate the ability of sulfur hexaflouride (SF6) to detect residual dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DMAPL) that forms below the water table during transport. Column experiments and batch partitioning tests were conducted to determine DNAPL-water partitioning coefficients that will be used in detecting residial zones. Tracer tests using bromide as nonpartitioning tracer showed a slower SF6 breakthrough compared to bromide. A method on how to estimate and predict DNAPL residual values is discussed.

Use of completely mixed flow-through systems: hydrolysis of phenyl picolinate

Article Abstract:

Completely mixed flow-through reactors proved useful in determining the hydrolysis reaction rates directly from the concentrations of the reactants in the outflow. Results from the hydrolysis of carboxylic acid ester, phenyl picolinate, reveal that mixed flow-through systems yield slower rates of the heterogenous hydrolysis than initial hydrolysis rates in batch systems. Moreover, the method allows a more thorough investigation of the inhibition by co-adsorbed species than batch reactors.

Sulfur hexafluoride as a gas tracer in soil venting operations

Article Abstract:

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) can be used as an effective air flow tracer during soil venting activities. Field tests in industrial sites show that procedures utilizing SF6 as tracers result in high mass recoveries and suggest that they are appropriate for operations involving the determination of travel time distributions between injection and extraction wells. These tests confirm the cost-effectiveness, reproducibility, reliability and the ease-of-application of this method.
