Doing the knowledge

Article Abstract:

KB Musica (knowledge Based Multi-sensor Systems In Computer integrated manufacturing Applications), a pan-European Esprit project, costing 7 million pounds sterling, aimed to develop low cost computerised sensor systems for manufacturing facilities. Research was divided into four demonstrator projects and the techniques have been used by Stephens, cyrstal glass manufacturer, to improve quality and by ICI to improve quality in the manufacture of plastic bottles at its chlorine plant. Other applications could include unmanned operating areas.

Sensing an opportunity

Article Abstract:

Advanced sensors are a rapidly growing industry, but manufacturers must think first of the market. In the defense and automotive slump many suppliers are looking at other markets for their devices, but technology alone will not create sales. New legislation is driving much of the boom in sensor demand, as materials dangerous to those handling them draw more concern. Personal, in-vivo patient, and biochemical or organic vapor monitoring are growing fastest.

Consulting the experts

Article Abstract:

Many engineers are becoming independent consultants as their jobs become redundant or their company closes. Older workers face the most trouble getting new positions. Consultants find age lends credibility, and independent work frees them from company constraints and salary limits. It is also less stable and brings less contact with peers. GMS Consultancy specializes in teaching executives and engineers to be successful consultants.
