Environmental consulting grows up

Article Abstract:

The economic recession has adversely affected the environmental industry's annual growth. Increased competition, customer sophistication and a continuing lack of capital underscored the need for environmental firms to adopt innovative management techniques and novel marketing approaches to keep themselves in the market and enhance their operations. Environmental consultants have been complacent prior to the recession so that they were unprepared for the downturn and lacked contingency measures for such an occurrence. They should now prioritize customer service and experience to be competitive.

The desalination situation

Article Abstract:

Water supplies in coastal communities are diminishing because of rapid population growth. The limitations of water conservation programs and the difficulty, as well as the financial costs, of providing freshwater supplies prompted water officials to explore other means of obtaining this necessity. Desalination was chosen as the means of increasing water supply. However, there are environmental and cost factors to consider. Technological improvements are expected to help desalination overcome its present limits.

The Perils of Point Loma

Article Abstract:

The Point Loma sewage outfall in San Diego, CA, had to be replaced first before a planned extension of the pipeline can be started. A fast-track emergency repair method was required when a massive rupture of unknown origin occurred last winter. After assessing the damage, the challenge posed by the closure was hurdled with the assurance that the repair would last for a long time. The same group who implemented the rehabilitation project are now working on the outfall extension.
