Don't blame technology this time

Article Abstract:

The relationship between technology and job skill seems to have been greatly exaggerated. Despite claims that technology and the evolving requirements of employers are making unskilled workers less and less needed, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that low-skilled positions accounted for most of the wage-and-salary employment in the US from 1983 to 1993. The bureau also projects that two-thirds of the fastest-growing occupations will require nothing more than a high school diploma during the period 1992-2005. Surveys of companies also reveal that, more than education, what employers want more from their workers are good attitude, communication skills and recommendations from previous employers.

Advancing anchorage technology

Article Abstract:

Anchorage systems have generally been effective, but there is still room for development. The Federation Internationale de la Precontraite's findings on anchorages provides substantial information for improvements such as the incorporation of protection systems in designs. Anchorage designers should develop more reliable testing methods, collate data on proof loading and load transfer and establish a comprehensive study of properties of ground-anchorage systems. There should be a stress on the functionality with regard to materials and acceptance testing of anchorages.

Sensing technology nabs Texas polluters who commute

Article Abstract:

Texas is adopting a vehicle emissions program designed to monitor highly polluting vehicles that enter a nonattainment zone, majority of which are located outside of the cities. The Texas Dept of Public Safety employs a remote sensor to measure the amount of pollutants being emitted by exhaust pipes while a camera takes a picture of license plate. After the polluters are identified, they are required to bring in their vehicles for testing.
