Driving to Mach 1: 'jetmobiles' try to go supersonic

Article Abstract:

The design philosophies used in two 'jetmobiles' in the quest for the land speed record is presented. The 'Spirit of America' jetmobile uses a single jet engine and relies on computer controls to attenuate the effects of sonic pressure on the car's body. The 'Thrust SSC' uses two jet engines and uses engine placement to compensate for lift forces.

DARPA officials have arranged a deal with three aerospace companies for the creation of a micro chip propulsion system that can efficiently be used for defense and satellite communication purposes. The team has successfully designed a 15-thruster chip capable of carrying out digital propulsion.
