EPA, environmentalists clash over proposal to test contaminated dredged sentiments

Article Abstract:

Proposed changes in testing contaminated dredged sediments have sparked a dispute between environmental groups and the EPA. The environmental associations, with the support of some scientists, claim that the agency is prioritizing harbor interests with its planned changes in testing standards for contaminated silt from the Port of New York/New Jersey, which will allow these to be dumped at sea. EPA officials deny the allegations, claiming that the proposal simply clarifies a misinterpretation of testing regulations stemming from a 1995 court decision on a case involving ocean dumping of contaminated dredge spoils from the harbor.

Industry opposition stops release of EPA sediment contamination point source report

Article Abstract:

The EPA has decided against the release of a report on sediment contamination point sources because of criticism from various quarters. Entitled 'National Sediment Contaminant Point Source Inventory: Analysis of Release Data for 1992,' the report ranks the importance of point sources in sediment contamination all over the US. Critics contend that the report is misleading because it did not take site-specific data into account. EPA officials stated that the report will not be a final agency document but it will be made available to anyone requesting a copy.
